Paul Pogba is finally in line for his first appearance with AS Monaco after the club named him in the travelling squad for Saturday’s Ligue 1 match away to Rennes — his first call-up since completing an 18-month doping suspension.
The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined Monaco on a free transfer in June, has not played a competitive fixture since September 2023, when he featured for Juventus in their victory over Empoli. Weeks later, Pogba tested positive for DHEA, a substance that increases testosterone levels, resulting in a four-year ban that was later reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Monaco coach Sébastien Pocognoli said the club has been working carefully to reintegrate Pogba as he builds rhythm and fitness after such a long spell out of action.
“We’re trying to help him get back to his highest level so the team can benefit,” Pocognoli said on Friday. “He still has his vision, his technique, and the capacity to adapt to what we want in midfield.”
The Belgian coach added that Pogba’s experience as a World Cup winner and former Manchester United standout could become a major asset once he adjusts to the intensity of top-flight competition again.
“He can bring leadership on and off the pitch,” Pocognoli said. “But he will have to reacclimate to the pace after so long away.”
Pogba was close to a return last month before a right-ankle issue delayed his comeback, but he is now deemed fit enough to join the squad as Monaco continue their strong start to the season.
Saturday’s game at Rennes could mark the Frenchman’s first steps back into elite football after more than a year on the sidelines.
